Who to see?
Your GP may refer you to a general surgeon if he or she thinks you may need to have an operation. In a broad sense, a hernia is a case for a general surgeon. A paediatric surgeon (children’s surgeon) is to be visited if the patient is a child (less than 12 years of age). However, you are free to consult with your family physician, health care provider, emergency room doctor, paediatrician or nurse practitioner.
Where is the surgery performed?
An inguinal hernia repair is done in a hospital operating room or one-day surgical facility by a surgeon who may specialize in hernia surgery.
Are there other treatment options?
Hernias can be managed conservatively by using a belt or truss. However, a hernia can become strangulated and this can result in a medical and surgical emergency situation.
